Younger viewers may not know the story of Sg Buloh. In the early 30 , this area was chosen because of its cool surroundings for the setting up of leprosy community that became the world’s second largest ! The original leprosy centre was 568 acres in size, housing up to 2,000 inmates who were ostriched by the society then. Now , about 78 hectares has been designated as national heritage and Sg Buloh is where we go to find indoor/outdoor plants, big or small pots and all kinds of gardening needs! Flanking the “Valley of Hope “ along the road sides are plots of nurseries that have been around for decades. The leprosy sanctuary was only opened freely for public access over a decade ago and it has built upon the “gardening” trade of the early inmates in their self surviving community. Take your family for a trip to this heritage area will be welcomed with lots of lush, old greener , laidback serenity and still echoes of Nature’s sounds in the air. Don’t forget, drop by at the “Valley of Hope “ leprosy centre and absorb some 1930s history !
