Disagreements over which era of music is the greatest has been happening for YEARS, but Shawn Mendes and James Corden’s riff-off takes us one step closer to solving that great debate.
Things got pretty heated Wednesday night on The Late Late Show when Shawn straight up told James that his musical tastes were outdated. Both the singer and host engaged in a little argument over pop music in the 90s and pop music now before challenging one another to a riff-off backed by The Filharmonic to settle the debate once and for all.
The ‘Stitches’ singer kicked off the musical battle with a pretty amazing rendition of Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s latest song, ‘This Is What You Came For,’ but James proved he was in it to win it with this little musical number.
You can never go wrong with the Spice Girls. Things got a little heated after that. Words were thrown, pushes were exchanged, but once that was over, the host started off the next round with ‘Jump’ by Kris Kross. However, that was no match with Shawn’s version of ‘Cheap Thrills.’
After two incredible rounds, James had a revelation that music back then and music today can co-exist. So to celebrate his epiphany, the two joined forces to sing ‘Stitches’ and this musical favorite.
Riff-offs aside, Shawn and James then sat down to talk about the important things in life, like a possible Shawn and Niall Horan collaboration. When asked if the collab rumors were true and if it would ever happen, Shawn said absolutely.
Seeing as how Niall just released a brand new and solo track…we wouldn’t be opposed to a Shawn and Niall song dropping any time soon.
So, who do you think won that riff-off? James or Shawn? Let me know in the comment section below!
