马大学生会在最鼎盛的60年代，曾自行经营过校园巴士、食堂、校刊，甚至积极参与政治；不过这些盛况，现已成绝响。1969年联盟于大选受到重挫并经历了513事件后，于1971年推出大专法令，逐渐以校方监管的学生理事会来取代学生自主的学生会，校园学生团体逐步丧失自治权。
