根据《法新社》报道，亚航QZ8501机长曾与航空管制中心联系，要求批准偏左飞行以避开恶劣天气。这项要求随即获得批准。过了几秒后，机长又要求提高到3万2千呎升至3万8千呎。航空管制中心考虑到同一时间上面还有其他飞机在飞行，因此并没有立刻批准，惟与新加坡协调后客机已失联。
