This video follows a conversation with Mr Lee Chien Nam on another of his creations, the classical Chinese ethnic two-string fiddle called erhu. This versatile bowed instrument can be traced back a 1,000 years to the proto-Mongolian tribes , hence it is often called the instrument of the babarians. In modern times the fine human-like sound reproductions of this instrument are often used in musicals and contemporary arrangements. Mr Lee has self-taught himself in this fine craft of making erhu for over 20 years.
One of the most important and fascinating fact of the erhu is that the sound box is covered with python skin ! Till today only python skin is used while many types of materials have been used for the sound box ranging from different types of wood to coconut shells. The unique sound is produced by the vibrations of the python skin when the horse hair bow is moved on the two strings. Mr Lee's craftsmanship extends to refurbishing other wood - based musical instruments as well as having a personal collection of erhus.
Once again, it is also a facsinating fact that a Malaysian artisan is keeping a true Chinese cultural instrument alive with his passion for art. It's never too late to join his pursuit and acquire a piece of culture before it is forgotten in time ! Indeed it would be a proud conversation piece anywhere !
