On the morning of Friday May 18, a student opened fire on his own high school in Texas. The very same day the second season of 13 Reasons Why debuted online. The horrific shooting incident left ten dead and ten more seriously injured. Netflix made a reactive decision just hours later to cancel its planned party and red carpet for the premiere. The streaming service released a statement with their decision reading QUOTE, “Our hearts are with the victims of the Santa Fe High School shooting, and with all victims of gun violence. In light of today’s tragedy, we are canceling the 13 Reasons Why S2 premiere event tonight.” The party was to take plate in West Hollywood and include appearances from Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, as well as the show’s producer Selena Gomez. This school shooting hits home for Selena, who grew up hours away from Santa Fe, Texas. Selena poured out her frustration online tweeting, “I am at a complete loss for words watching yet another school shooting. This time in my home state of Texas. Congress continues to do absolutely nothing and it’s infuriating.”
Despite the premiere party being canceled the entire season 2 is still up on Netflix. WARNING: spoiler section ahead. Turn off your volume if you do NOT want to hear the next 20 seconds of this video. As bingers of the new season will know, the S2 storyline includes an ATTEMPTED school shooting. A triggered student is armed with a rifle and handguns, but is thankfully talked out of the act by a classmate who helps them escape. The episodes contain several references to gun violence along with possible motives including sexual assault, depression, and bullying.
