On May 18, 1981, this Ferrari 512 BB arrived via transporter at the home of its new owner in the Southwest. The prosperous businessman waiting for it had paid $90,000 for the car, all in, at his favored dealer, Auto Palace Sales of Pittsburgh. Accompanying the car was its invoice, signed by salesman Elvidio Grande, and an odometer mileage statement that verified the car was delivered with only 400 kilometers. Another 314 kilometers were racked up in EPA testing.
In his few short drives in the car, the owner would put barely another kilometer on the Pirelli tires. The car was eventually rolled into his garage, with the factory plastic still on the seats and door sills, and for 33 years, there it has remained.
As one would expect from such a low-mileage example, the car is preserved in wonderful original condition. Its paint finish is bright, shiny, smooth, and nearly free of imperfections, while the seats and door sills are still wrapped in their original factory-delivery plastic! For the connoisseur of Ferrari originality, there are numerous fascinating details to behold. The factory crackle finish applied under the front clip is intact, as are all the original labels and tags, which are located exactly where one would expect to find them. Of course, all of the original tools are present and accounted for, as they had never been used.
The car is offered with its original keys on their original dealer fob, as well as the leather and cloth folio, which contains such fascinating and rarely seen original documentation as the 1979–1980 Ferrari Sales and Service Organization brochure, a lubricants comparison chart, the owner’s manual for the car’s Pioneer KE-2300 stereo, and a mint-condition 512 BB owner’s manual. Also accompanying the car is the original invoice and odometer mileage verification statement, referenced above, as well as its original delivery documentation. Having been in storage essentially since new, it is advised by RM Auctions that the car be professionally inspected and serviced before being returned to the road.
As it was sold new and then hidden away, the existence of this 512 BB has remained unknown to many Ferrari historians. It is one of the few cars that escaped Hilary Raab’s intensive record keeping, published in the Ferrari Serial Numbers Manual. This is a genuine “lost Ferrari,” and it is offered for sale here for the first time, publically or otherwise, since new.
