Malaysiakini celebrated its 20th year of providing news and views that matter yesterday night.
During his speech at the Malaysiakini 20th anniversary gala dinner in Pullman Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysiakini co-founder Steven Gan said that Malaysiakini has taken its share of the blows, but we are still standing.
"Over the past two decades, Malaysiakini has covered four prime ministers (three actually, perhaps four soon). We have covered five general elections, countless rallies, and saw the arrest of three of our journalists."
"Yes, we have taken our share of the blows. But we are still standing. In that time, we’ve seen change, too – from Mahathir to Mahathir."
1,000 guests attended the gala dinner yesterday, also present were PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, Bukit Lanjan assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong, Damansara MP Tony Pua, former Batu MP Tian Chua, and the prime minister's media advisor Kadir Jasin.
Others who were at the event included MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker, representatives from NGOs such as Sisters in Islam, All Women's Action Society (Awam), the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy, AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes, Hindraf founder P Uthayakumar and veteran labour activist Bruno Pereira.
