It feels like we’ve had a new award show to watch every week, and we just found out who got nominated for the most coveted prize – an Oscar. The Oscars are the most prestigious of all award shows and you know you’ve made it when you get honored by the academy with a nomination, or even better; a win.
There has been a ton of conversation about two movies in particular, Get Out and Call Me By Your Name. At the Golden Globes, Get Out was nominated for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy which made people quite angry because if you’ve seen it you KNOW it’s not a comedy. And Call Me By Your Name has yet to take home a win. Fans have been nervous that these two dramas wouldn’t be considered for Best Picture by the Academy and thankfully they were wrong!
Get Out and Call Me By Your Name have both been nominated for Best Picture along with “Darkest Hour”, “Dunkirk”, “Lady Bird”, “Phantom Thread”, “The Post”, “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. Every single one of these movies is a masterpiece and we’re glad that we’re not the ones who have to choose which one should be recognized as the best.
Almost every Best Picture nominee also has someone up for Best Lead Actor/Actress. Timothée Chalamet is up for an Oscar for “Call Me by Your Name” along with Daniel Day-Lewis, for “Phantom Thread”, Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour”, Denzel Washington for“ Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and Daniel for “Get Out”!
For the ladies we have Saoirse Ronan for “Ladybird”, Margot Robbie for “I, Tonya” Frances McDormand for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, Sally Hawkins for “The Shape of Water” and Meryl Streep for “The Post”.
Greta Gerwig is getting heralded for directing “Ladybird” and is the first woman to be nominated for Best Director since 2010 and is only the fifth woman in the history of the award show to be nominated for the apparently exclusive club,
Along with Greta, Rachel Morrison is making history as the first EVER female Cinematographer nominee for her work in “Mudbound”. We are loving how these women are breaking glass ceilings and being recognized for their talents.
Other standout nominees include The Greatest Showman’s “This Is Me” for Best Original Song, Coco for Best Animated Feature and Beauty and the Beast for Best Costume Design.
We have NO clue who is going win but we have a lot of time to think about it because the Oscars isn’t until March 4.
Who do you want to see take home a win and do you think anyone got snubbed? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to see who won at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. I’m Joslyn Davis, thanks for tuning in.
