Well, it’s finally here, you guys – Mockingjay Part I is in theaters and we’re happy to report it’s a great kick off to the end of this amazing franchise.
Yes, you can all rest easy Tributes, because even though Mockingjay is arguably the least-praised book of the trilogy, director Francis Lawrence’s on-screen adaptation will make just about everyone happy. Well, not HAPPY HAPPY because the nature of the movie is actually kind of depressing, but you know what we mean.
With that being said, we’re here to break down five of our favorite moments from Mockingjay Part I, and OBVIOUSLY, spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.
First, we have the moment when Katniss finally agrees to be the Mockingjay, and Effie is ready to whip her into shape with a fierce makeover. We love this for a couple of reasons – first, it’s hilarious to see Effie Trinket attempting to blend into the world of District 13 since she’s so used to bold attire and lavish amenities, a la the Capitol. However, this movie shows real growth from Effie, and Elizabeth Banks does just such a great job with this character. The second reason we loved this scene? We get just a little flash of Cinna when we see the sketches he made for Katniss’ Mockingjay costume, reminding us how much we loved Lenny Kravitz as that character – and how much it SUCKED that he was killed in Catching Fire.
Second, we have the scene where Katniss visits District 8. President Coin and Plutarch send her there because they think having the rebels see her will give them a second wind of sorts, but the Capitol finds out she’s there and bombs a hospital filled with wounded people. There’s tons of great action here, and it’s one of our first intros to the new characters such as Cressida and the rest of the propos (prop-oh’s) crew. However, we all know the best part of this whole sequence is when Katniss delivers this line to President Snow:

Moving along, another scene we loved was when District 13 was under attack by the Capitol. This whole sequence is the definition of edge-of-your-seat action! So, in case you’re a bit rusty on the details of this from the book – Peeta is being interviewed by Caeser Flickerman, and warns the people of District 13 that the Capitol is coming to attack them. This calls for an evacuation into their underground bunker, and hundreds of people are frantically running down stairs to make it to safety in a very short amount of time. However, when Katniss arrives, she notices that Prim is missing, and realizes it’s because she went back to save her cat. Katniss and Gale go to find her, and are THISCLOSE to not making it back into the bunker in time. Seriously, heart-pounding stuff, you guys.
Speaking of heart-pounding, that’s where our number four moment comes in – and it of course has to do with Finnick Odair. I’m kind of bummed that Finnick wasn’t in this movie as much, but the one crucial scene he was part of was definitely a highlight. As District 13 is hacking into the Capitol, they broadcast a message from Finnick where he’s exposing President Snow for making Finnick sell his body to wealthy Capitol citizens. However, Finnick was paid in secrets, and basically tells all of Panem how President Snow poisons all his enemies, exposing him for the true EVIL fraud that he is.
And last but certainly not least, we have when Peeta was finally rescued from the Capitol after being tortured and brainwashed. Now, if you read the book you know exactly what happens here, but again, just in case you need a refresher – PEETA TRIES TO KILL KATNISS! Yes, though Katniss had been fighting to save Peeta all along, once he’s finally recovered, he tried to choke Katniss to death, seriously injuring her. Once the dust has settled from that, they realized Peeta has undergone hijacking, which basically means they’ve brainwashed Peeta into wanting to kill Katniss. And with that, they leave fans waiting with bated breath until Mockingjay Part II hits theaters next year. Talk about a cliffhanger!
