Zendaya has just been cast in the role of a lifetime. Yes, the former Shake It Up star has just landed the role of R&B superstar Aaliyah in the upcoming Lifetime biopic based on her life that was tragically cut short at the age of 22.
The film -- tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B -- will be based on Christopher Farley's bestselling biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman. No word yet on a release date or other cast members -- most notably who might play her ex-husband R. Kelly -- but we'll keep you updated.
Now, some people might be a little hesitant to embrace Zendaya with open arms for this role since, after all, Aaliyah was a pioneer in R&B music back in the 90s, but we've rounded up five reasons why we think Zendaya will totally OWN this part.
First of all, Zendaya is an amazing singer -- just like Aaliyah was. Before passing away in a plane crash in August 2001, Aaliyah had a number of hits such as "Try Again," "One in a Million," and of course her biggest hit out of them all -- "Are You That Somebody." If Zendaya's hit song "Replay" is any indication, she'll totally nail the part, vocally, that is.
Next -- Zendaya is an amazing dancer -- again, just like Aaliyah was. Zendaya famously came in second place on Dancing With the Stars last year, so it's easy to see she'll have no problem recreating many of Aaliyah's famous dance moves.
Third -- Zendaya is the perfect age. Aaliyah first came on the scene in 1994 at the tender age of 15. And at 17, Zendaya is the perfect age when they can make her look a little younger for the earlier years, and age her up for the later years. Also, we're sure that Zendaya can relate to a zealous fan base at such a young age thanks to her turn on the Disney Channel's former show, Shake it Up.
Fourth -- Zendaya can act! She truly is a triple threat -- she can sing, dance, AND act -- which is also the same career path Aaliyah took. Aaliyah started off with her music career, and then went into acting with films such as Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned.
Last but not least -- the resemblance is uncanny. Zendaya TRULY looks so much like Aaliyah, we can see why they decided to make this casting choice. Especially after Zendaya dressed as the singer for Halloween last year. Seriously -- that is crazy!
And there you have it -- five reasons why Zendaya will make the PERFECT on-screen Aaliyah. Do you agree with us?
