It’s no question that the VMAs is usually the most controversial and meme-able award show of the year so in preparation for this year’s show, we’re walking down memory lane with some fun VMA facts from past shows. Because the VMAs has been brining entertainment gold into our lives for so long, it’s hard to imagine an award show season without it, but the show actually wasn’t born until 1984!
Fast forward to the 2000s and in 2001 we were gifted with Britney Spears’ iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance with that yellow python around her neck.
Fun fact here is that everyone always remembers the snake, but neglect to acknowledge that she also danced with a frickin live tiger in a cage at the beginning of the performance. The land of pop culture was never the same after that which makes it even more exciting that Britney will be returning to the stage once again this year. Then in 2002, Pink took the stage to accept her first Moonman for her hit “Get the Party Started” but girlfriend was completely wasted out of her mind.
And speaking of acceptance speeches, everyone thinks Kanye was the first to interrupt someone on stage, but the first time was actually back in 1994 when one of the Beastie Boys interrupted R.E.M’s acceptance speech for Breakthrough Video.
Another fun fact is about good ole Justin Bieber. In 2010, Justin became the youngest person to ever win a VMA ironically for his hit “Baby.” Before Bieber, Avril Lavigne was the youngest winner when she won Best New Artist in 2002. Fast forward to 2010, and the world couldn’t stop talking about Gaga’s infamous meat gown. The dress’s odor became it’s own presence throughout the night and in case you were wondering, the gown weighed in at 50 pounds. But Gaga’s dress wasn’t the only memorable fashion statement. In 2014, Katy Perry and Riff Raff recreated Britney and Justin’s iconic denim looks and the pop culture world lost its mind.
And in 2013, how could we forget when Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke put on a show that had the world talking for months. It was the twerk heard around the world. And fun fact, following the show, the FCC received over 150 formal complaints about the performance for being “too inappropriate.”
Those were simpler times. Who knows what the heck will happen at this year’s show. You can catch all the action when the 2016 VMA’s airs LIVE from Madison Square Garden this Sunday at 9pm.
