While I travelling in Padang in West Sumatra, Indonesia I decided to visit the absolutely beautiful Mosque in the city called Grand Mosque of West Sumatra. It is not only one of the most stunning Mosques I have ever seen but it is one of the most stunning buildings I have ever seen.

While I was in Jakarta last month I visited the equally impressive Istiqlal Mosque/Masjid Istiqlal. Both Mosques are very different architecturally but both beautiful in their own way.

Both are great Mosques and places of religious importance for Islam in Indonesia.

Grand Mosque of West Sumatra/Masjid Raya Sumatera Barat really is an iconic piece of architecture. It was built in 2007 and designed by the architect Rizal Muslimin.

It stands out with it's four pointed corners which take inspiration from the Minangkabau architecture that can be seen all over Padang and this part of Indonesia.

"The shape of the roof is also meant to symbolize the cloth that was held by the four clan leaders of the Quraysh tribe by its corners to lift the Black Stone to the current spot in Mecca."

I could not enter the main prayer hall as it is under renovation at the moment. I hope I can go back to visit again next year when it is completed.
