Andrew was recently asked about his upcoming role in the play ‘Angels in America’, in which he plays a gay man struggling with the reality of AIDS during the 1980s. During the NT Platform discussion, he shared that he watched Ru Paul’s “Drag Race” to prepare for the role, saying QUOTE, “Every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru. I mean every single series of RuPaul's Drag Race. I mean every series. This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act—that's all."
Andrew then went on to clarify his sexuality, saying QUOTE, “As far as I know, I am not a gay man. Maybe I'll have an awakening later in my life, which I'm sure will be wonderful and I'll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I'm secluded to my area, which is wonderful, as well.”
Naturally, the internet had some things to say about all that. One user sarcastically tweeted QUOTE, “Hey did you know that if you marathon Drag Race you are a gay man? That's all it takes. Who knew. Thanks, Andrew Garfield”, while another wrote QUOTE, “Ur a talented guy,but seem to be completely oblivious to what is coming out of ur mouth”. Many others opted to express themselves with frustrated reaction gifs, and one even called him a straight up “moron”. Ouch.
Although his comments have upset many in the LGBTQ community, Andrew has gone out of his way to question his casting in the role, saying QUOTE,“...a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?...It was about doing honor, doing justice.” And he called the role QUOTE, "the most fulfilling creative experience I’ll ever hope to have." It’s probably safe to assume that Andrew didn’t mean to offend anyone with his comments, but hopefully he’s since been told that watching every season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race does not qualify someone as gay.
Okay guys now I wanna know what you think--do you think Andrew’s remarks were insensitive, and do you think he should apologize for them?
