Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today that Malaysia has encountered difficulties negotiating with the European Union (EU) regarding the discrimination against palm oil following the new rules on deforestation by the trade bloc.
Anwar said this during a joint press conference with German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Putrajaya this evening.
Europe is the third largest importer of Malaysian palm oil, which accounts for 9.0 percent of total exports.
According to the proposed deforestation regulations, commodities such as palm oil which were grown or raised on land that was subjected to deforestation or forest degradation will be banned from entering the EU market after the regulations are passed in the European Parliament.
