The news of Prince’s death yesterday has rocked the world, and many of his peers, fans, and fellow public figures have come out to show their support with tributes and messages of shock and heartache for the loss.
Jennifer Hudson, who is currently starring in The Color Purple on Broadway, paid tribute to Prince by singing his hit song “Purple Rain” with the rest of her cast mates after their show ended.
As you can imagine, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house after that. Mariah Carey also sang to honor Prince’s memory. Mariah was in Paris Thursday night as part of her Sweet Fantasy World Tour, and dedicated her song “One Sweet Day” to Prince while fighting back tears. She also told the crowd QUOTE, “He was a friend to me, too, and he talked me through some times I really, really needed somebody. He was an incredible person if you never got to meet him. I'm sure his music has touched every single person in here, so let's have a moment of silence for Prince."
Along with Jennifer and Mariah, many other friends and peers expressed their love and for the late singer on social media, including Will Smith, who shared that he had only just spoken to Prince hours before his death, saying on Facebook QUOTE, “I am stunned and heartbroken. I just spoke with him last night. Today, Jada & I mourn with all of you the loss of a beautiful poet, a true inspiration, and one of the most magnificent artists to ever grace this earth.”
Beyonce also paid tribute on Facebook, sharing this Prince quote along with writing “We lost a legend.” And as much of a fan Beyonce was of Prince… He too was a fan of her, once saying QUOTE, “I ain’t mad at anything she does. Anything. Those are great songs.” We couldn’t agree more, and we know that he inspired many of those great songs.
Other Prince tributes included a block party near his Minneapolis home and a dance party in Brooklyn that Spike Lee attended. While this loss is a devastating one, we’re sure that nothing would make Prince happier than people singing and dancing along with his songs in honor of his memory.
The autopsy will be performed today, which will hopefully bring some insight into how and why this tragedy occurred. Our thoughts are with Prince’s family, friends, loved ones, and fellow fans.
