Celebs Are Losing MILLIONS of Twitter Followers For THIS Reason

Twitter is partaking in little a summer cleaning and it’s targeting a number of inactive or suspicious Twitter accounts. If you’re an active Twitter user, chances are, you’re definitely going to survive the purge, but a number of others aren’t so lucky.
Now, a Twitter purge won’t affect the average user too much since we all probably won’t see a huge dip in our number of followers. Howeverrr, it’s much different for some of our favorite celebs.
In fact, Time is reporting that some of the biggest celebs have lost MILLIONS of followers already. According to Time, Katy Perry has lost 1.5 million followers and while that’s a pretty hefty number, it’s not nearly as much as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and former President Obama, who each lost a reported 2 million followers.
Other huge stars like Rihanna and Lady Gaga were also affected. Variety reported that both RiRi and Gaga lost 2 mill each while USA Today reported that Kim K lost 1.7 million followers of her own.
While this may all seem super sudden, it sounds like an account purge has been in the works for quite some time. Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety lead, explained why this is happening in a lengthy blog.
She explained QUOTE, “Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate.
Over the years, we’ve locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behavior. In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts, and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in. This week, we’ll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally. As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down.
Most people will see a change of four followers or fewer; others with larger follower counts will experience a more significant drop. We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation.”
