Many people were hoping the government would pass an amendment curbing gun laws following the mass shooting in Orlando just eight days ago. However, a divided Senate failed to pass any gun control legislation Monday night which highlights two things: First, it highlights the divide between the democrats and republicans on the issue of guns. Secondly, it draws attention to the muscle of the NRA.
The four proposals would have made it more difficult potential terrorists and the mentally ill to obtain guns, mostly through expanded background checks. Each needed 60 votes to pass but none secured enough votes.
After the results of the stalemate were reported, celebrities took to social emdia to express their thoughts. John Legend wrote “The foolishness and heartlessness coming from our Congress re: gun control is not surprising, but still so very disappointing and shameful. You don’t get to talk ‘tough on terror’ if you’re too afraid of the NRA to do anything about guns. You’re a coward. We have to vote the GOP out of leadership of both House & Senate to get anything done on guns. Please vote in November.” He also continued to retweet people holding their senators accountable for their votes.
Alyssa Milano was also upset writing: “The Senate rejected all four gun control measures that were up for consideration on Monday. F*ck you, Senate.”
In a very powerful statement, Judd Apatow posted a list of the senators who voted AGAINST the proposals and wrote “We will remember.”
Ellen Pompeo retweeted Apatow, adding, “A list of who cares about this country and who doesn’t.”
Sarah Silverman retweeted a number of messages, and tweeted, “If u voted against this its bc ur a greedy selfish NRA suckling f*ck. How am I the godless one? Get a moral compass.”
Rowan Blanchard spoke up saying “It's a scary time to by anyone in this country right now but it's an especially scary time to be a person growing up in it”
Josh Gad wrote “Every senator who voted down the gun terror vote, please tell me what hell feel likes when u get there. Wondering if it’s as hot as they say”
Andy Cohen retweeted writer Gerry Dugan, who wrote, “My thoughts & prayers are with the @SenateGOP for the ballot box bloodbath coming their way.” The “Watch What Happens Live”
Mia Farrow spoke on the influence of the NRA writing: “The NRA has gifted more than $36 million to the 56 Republican senators who blocked the gun control measures today
Laura Benanti said “STOP WATCHING THE BACHELORETTE AND GET MAD ABOUT THIS! How is this not the only thing we're talking about?!”
Jenna Fisher wrote “Dear Senate: You did not represent me today. I will
And before the vote began, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Bell, Goldie Hawn, Britney Spears and many others were tweeting the hashtag #DisarmHate, urging people to call their representatives and take a stand to create change.
Hillary Clinton tweeted: “An overwhelming majority of Americans (and gun owners) support steps to reduce gun violence. RT if you're one of them. #DisarmHate
And Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted: “These proposals are commonsense. It is incomprehensible as to why Republicans would oppose them. #DisarmHate”
