Venue: Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
Comic Fiesta is Malaysia’s largest and longest-running animation, comics & games (ACG) convention. On Friday night, 27 December, people were already queuing to purchase tickets the next morning. Early Saturday morning approximately 6:30am, there were already a few hundred people waiting in line and when the ticket booths were open, the crowd had swell in the thousands with some visitors who had already purchased tickets on-line making a bee-line to the entrance at 9:30am while the rest were allowed in at 10:00am.
What’s amazing about this fiesta is that it’s the first and biggest non-profit convention of its kind in Malaysia, organized by a group of passionate individuals brought together by one common goal, and powered by a mass community of professionals, amateurs and enthusiasts of all age groups.
Like all great things, Comic Fiesta was borne out of disappointment and founders Pin, Sakana, Xengk, Tenkawa (from Japan) and a few Malaysian friends decided that they could organize a better ACG event that would cater to the needs and demands of the fans. Since its humble beginnings as a small exhibition at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in 2002, accommodating only 150 people, Comic Fiesta has grown tremendously in both size and scope. Ever since then, ACG have continued to expand f to bigger venues such as Ancasa Hotel & Spa, the National Art Gallery (and here, luck was on their side as they managed to get prolific Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Lat (of Kampung Boy fame) as their guest-of-honour). From here, ACG moved to the prestigious Sekolah Sri Sedaya due to its strategic location and easy access by public transportation after which came Berjaya Times Square, Sunway Convention Centre and finally Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. Comic Fiesta 2012 marked ACG’s tenth anniversary and drew over 25,000 visitors and steadily increasing over the years. They are now into their twelfth year and with the decision to keep and expand the Live Art Demonstration & Portfolio Review Pavilion, certainly will play a part in pushing the number of visitors this year to surpass 2013’s 35,000 visitors.
