We’re invited by our subscriber Syaza to cook and eat a Malay lunch with her family in their kampung (village) in Perlis. We gather fruits and vegetables from the garden including pucuk ubi (tapioca leaves), tapioca, papaya, coconut and herbs for the meal. Syaza’s grandparent’s have a large garden filled with different fruit trees and vegetable plants- even tanks which house freshwater fish like crawling perch which are used to make pekasam!

On the menu is:
- kari kepala ikan (fish head curry)
- poached stingray in tamarind water topped with tomato, red onion, chilli
- sambal belacan
- masak lemak nangka or jackfruit cooked in a coconut and turmeric gravy
- kerabu, a salad made from grated, toasted coconut, herbs and tripe
- pekasam (fermented fish)
- ulam (raw vegetables)
- chillies cooked with tamarind water

For dessert we gather some tapioca from the garden, peel it, cut it into chunks and boil it. It’s then served with grated coconut and cane sugar.

What a feast! A huge terima kasih banyak to Syaza and her amazing family for their hospitality and generosity. We loved the food, laughs and conversation we shared with you all! See you all again soon!

We are in Malaysia for another wee while and would love any food recommendations. Please let us know your favourite places to eat in the comments below. And if you like this video, please give it a thumbs up, share it and subscribe to our channel. Thanks so much for your support.

We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist.
