The existing Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) for Major Appointments does not have the force of law as the constitutional changes needed to facilitate its establishment have not been made.
This is according to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“We don't have a PSC.
“We intend to have it, but to do that we need to change some provisions in (the) constitution.
“To change that you need a two-thirds majority and the government doesn't have it,” he said during a press conference when asked about whether Putrajaya will refer the appointment of the Suhakam chairperson to the PSC.
