Back in September, Francia Raisa made headlines when Selena Gomez announced that she had undergone kidney transplant surgery due to her lupus and that Francia donated one of her kidneys.
There are few things that are more sacrificial and loving than literally giving one of your best friends a part of you and now Francia and Selena will forever be connected. The two met in 2007 back when Francia was on The Secret Life of The American Teenager and Selena was still shooting Wizards of Waverly Place. They both met when their networks sent some of their biggest stars to visit a local children's hospital. Selena and Francia were put in the same group and instantly clicked. We definitely think it’s a full-circle moment, since they met in a hospital and then ended up going through an organ transplant together.
They duo didn’t reveal the organ transplant until several months after the actual surgery, which is why we saw Selena at events and appearing on stage. The recovery process for organ transplants varies depending on the person, but it is also different for the person donating and the person receiving.
While on Harry Connick Jr’s talk show, HARRY, Francia opened up about the recovery process and how truly difficult it was, explaing that her doctor told her she couldn't move for two months. Yea, TWO MONTHS! She had to get a lot of help during that time, even when she showered.
She said QUOTE, “I’m a very, very active person, so the fact that my doctor said I couldn’t move for two months. Two months I couldn’t do anything active. All I could do was walk. That was very hard for me.”
She also spoke about how humbling the whole experience was, especially because Selena was getting stronger faster.
We can’t imagine how difficult the recovery was, but we know she wouldn’t change it for the world because she got to help her best friend live a strong, pain-free life. Would you ever donate an organ to your best friend? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to see how Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber packed on the PDA at Justin’s dad’s wedding. I’m Renee Shafii, thanks for tuning in.
