International Republican Institute (IRI) president Daniel Twining has claimed that his organisation has been attempting to "strengthen" opposition parties in Malaysia since 2002.
In a forum by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on July 12, he told the audience that the new Malaysia government's approach towards deals with China were beneficial to the US.
However, Twining said IRI did not claim credit for the transition in Malaysia.
In recent years, the IRI has been accused of training the opposition and coup leaders in Honduras, Haiti, Cuba, Egypt and Tunisia, among other countries.
In a response to Malaysiakini, PKR info chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said his party had engagements with many organisations, including IRI, but in under no circumstances do these organisations influence the democratic process in Malaysia.
PKR leader Nurul Izzah when met in Parliament said IRI also works with many other parties including Umno and Gerakan.
She added that working with IRI is nothing insidious like what former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) director-general Hasanah Abdul Hamid allegedly did before GE14.
PKR veteran Zuraida Kamaruddin said IRI funded some of the party's training programmes, but they also do it for members of all political parties.
