25-year-old James Bawi was born in the Chin State, in the northwest of Myanmar. He lost his father when he was just five months old, leaving him and his two brothers in the sole care of his mother.

At the age of six, his mother reluctantly sent him and his brothers to different orphanages. To her, it was the only way she could ensure that they received an education. Without a line of communication between James and his mother, they would not speak again for nine years.
