Hong Kong’s biggest mosque was hit by blue dye from water cannons as the police swept down on protesters defying a rally ban on Sunday.
A group of six or seven people were outside the mosque when it was sprayed.
The dye, used to identify protesters, also contains a painful pepper solution.
The Muslim Council of Hong Kong appealed for calm, saying that Kowloon Mosque was not police’s intended target.
