Kate McKinnon sings “Hallelujah” as Hillary Clinton in SNL’s cold open!
Saturday Night Live reacts to Trump’s presidency with a haunting performance.
SNL is known for their political skits and I don’t think we were the only ones dying to know how they would react to Donald Trump’s shocking presidential win this week. But we didn’t see this coming. The episode hosted by Dave Chappelle saw Kate McKinnon open the show as her infamous Hillary Clinton persona at the piano, singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.
This week Leonard Cohen, an iconic poet, songwriter and singer passed away at the age of 82. And SNL’s emotional tribute to the late singer seems to have a double meaning. The simple performance gives off a defeated tone for the show, after a painfully lost election and the loss of Leonard Cohen. The “Hallelujah” song message is too relevant this week, as if saying a prayer for our nation to come together after the election. Kate as Hillary fought back tears and ended her impressive performance with THIS message.
That seems to say it all. Now we wanna hear from you guys… what do you think of this somber cold open? Should Saturday Night Live have delivered us a political skit instead? To lighten the mood, click here to check out some extreme grilled cheeses on Cheat Day! I’m your host Joslyn Davis, I’ll catch ya laterrrrrrr.
