In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, Katy dished all about how if she could, she would change the lyrics to the song responsible for launching her to superstardom: “I Kissed a Girl.”
So, what’s that about? I mean, it’s catchy, you can’t help but dance to it, so why the sudden change of heart? Well, Katy told the mag that she wishes she could switch up the lyrics a bit to get rid of, QUOTE, “a couple of stereotypes.”
Already, the song is 10 years old, and Katy’s well aware that a lot of things have changed since then, and nowadays, she’d rather break stereotypes than add fuel to them.
She told Glamour, QUOTE, “I think we’ve really changed, conversationally, in the past 10 years. We’ve come a long way. Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity.” Wow… we couldn’t agree more!
She then continued by saying that changes would definitely need to be made to the lyrics if it were rewritten now, 10 years later. She said, QUOTE, “I probably would make an edit on it. Lyrically, it has a couple of stereotypes in it. Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much.”
With a simple look back at the lyrics, it’s pretty obvious which ones she’d like to rewrite. For example, the lyric, “It’s not what good girls do// Not how they should behave,” implies that in many ways, bisexuality is wrong, when, as we all know, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Also, several times throughout the song she mentioned that she hopes that her boyfriend won’t mind her experimenting with women, which implies that bisexuality is only experimentation and nothing more, when, of course, that’s not the case either.
To be honest, we think it’s super cool that Katy’s keeping it so real and addressing the issues with her lyrics a whole decade after the fact. The truth is, in just 10 years we’ve progressed A LOT when it comes to breaking down stereotypes and accepting people for who they are, and we’re so glad she recognizes that.
