KJ Apa is finally opening up about falling asleep at the wheel and crashing his car after a grueling day on the Riverdale set back in September.
After working upwards of 16 hours on the set of Riverdale in September, KJ Apa dozed off behind the wheel during his 45-minute drive home and crashed his car into a pole. The actor was luckily not injured in the accident and while initial reports said he had to be hospitalized, Warner Brothers said he was simply treated by paramedics on the scene and didn’t go to the hospital at all.
Even though the wreck obviously could’ve been a lot worse, it was incredibly scary for both KJ and the rest of the Riverdale crew, who also often work long, hard hours on set. More than a month has passed since KJ’s accident, and he’s finally ready to open up about that eye-opening night.
Speaking to Esquire magazine, KJ revealed QUOTE “That was just a one-off accident, and it was a mistake on my part. I should have pulled over and gone to sleep instead of battling my way home. But I learned from it. It was a blessing in disguise. I came out unscathed, and I thank God that I’m okay—it could have been a lot worse.”
Many people, including some of the Riverdale cast and crew, demanded better working conditions following KJ’s accident. The New Zealand-born actor says, however, that nothing has really changed in the days following.
He explained QUOTE “The schedule didn’t change. It’s still a requirement for the actors to drive to work, which is fair enough. The crew works longer than we do, and they have to drive back and forth to work every day.”
The studio maintains that workers are all able to request a car to drive them home, or a hotel room, if they feel they are unable to drive home after a long day on set.
KJ hopes what happened to him will be a wakeup call for other actors who work similar schedules.
He finished the interview by saying QUOTE “It puts things in perspective for actors on other shows; when you’re driving home, you’ve got to be mindful and make sure your mind’s right and that you’re not tired. I was really lucky the production was there for me and helped me the whole way, which made me feel looked after.”
OUTRO: KJ is so lucky he walked away from the car accident uninjured. It’s so important that everyone listens to their bodies and knows their limits, especially before doing something that is potentially dangerous like operating a vehicle. Do you think Riverdale’s production schedule should’ve changed after the crash? Tell us what you think in the comments below. After you do that, click here to find out if Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart CONFIRMED their relationship with a couples costume on Halloween. I’m your host Zoe Lillian, thanks for watching Clevver!
