YouTube star Laura Lee has issued an apology after being exposed for racist tweets sent in 2012.
The beauty guru admits her words were inexcusable
YouTube star Laura Lee found herself in hot water yesterday after she was exposed for being racist on Twitter back in 2012. The beauty guru deactivated her Twitter as a result, but was still on the receiving end of tons of backlash because A) racism is never acceptable and B) it seemed like she was running away from the situation rather than tackling it head-on with an apology. The 29-year-old finally decided to stop hiding, however, and apologized for her past actions.
Laura issued a lengthy apology on Twitter last night, explaining that she has grown a lot in six years and now understands the severity of her “inexcusable” words.
The statement begins QUOTE “I want to deeply apologize for the comments of mine that recently surfaced from six years ago. The insensitive retweet and tweets I made are inexcusable and I apologize from the bottom of my heart to anyone affected by them.”
She then goes on to explain that she deactivated her Twitter account because she was QUOTE “mad at [herself] for the ignorant tweets that [she] made back in 2012” and she has grown a lot since then.
She explains QUOTE “That girl who tweeted that isn’t who I am today. I now understand the seriousness behind those tweets. As a small town girl from Alabama I wish I had the cultural education six years ago that I have now. Those tweets aren’t humorous in any way to me today and I am truly sorry to everyone I have hurt and offended.
I feel so disgusted about this and want you to know from the bottom of my heart I am incredibly grateful for this community. Social media has taught me so much about the injustice, bullying, and inequality people face daily. I’m at a place of more understanding now, but there’s always room for me to learn and grow. I’m thankful for my subscribers, this community and my husband who all continue to help me on that journey.”
The makeup artist realizes, however, that actions speak louder than words and promises to get QUOTE “involved with foundations that focus on educating the importance of equality and social justice.”
But while Laura has received a lot of support for her apology, former bestie Jeffree Star, who previously said she has an evil soul, doesn’t think the drama is over quite yet.
He tweeted QUOTE “The truth always comes out… There’s still so much more to be revealed. Remember, 2018 still has 4 months left”
He also couldn’t hold back his laughter about the whole situation on Snapchat
