MALTA- Mosta: EXIT of the Statue of St Mary from its niche 2014

The ceremony for the EXIT of the titular statue of St. Mary was held on 29 July at the Mosta Parish Church, Malta. The purpose is for the preparation of the Annual Feast of The Assumption of Our Lady which falls on 15 August. The solemn ceremony was celebrated by the Very Rev Fr Albert Buhagiar, Archpriest.
A ‘Pilgrimage Tour by bicycle’ around the streets of Mosta was held after, followed by fireworks display.

The church is also known as the Rotunda or the Dome. This majestic building is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. Dedication date - 15 October 1871.

Built in the 19the century on the site of a previous church, by the Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé. Its dome is among the largest in the world, with an internal diameter of 37.2 metres (122 ft); the rotunda walls are 9.1 metres (30 ft) thick (necessary to support the weight of the dome). The rotunda dome is the 3rd-largest church dome in Europe and the 9th largest in the world.

Situated in the middle of the island of Malta, Mosta is one of the biggest towns or villages on the Maltese Islands, with a population of just over 20,000.

Mosta has two great band clubs: Nicolo' Isouard and St Mary and also has two fireworks factories both of which make spectacular mechanical and aerial fireworks.
