Manaweblife continues to unveil the hidden and interesting culinary side of the small, quaint town of Jenjarom for its viewers and subscribers. The often familiar yeow char kwai (dough dipped in boiling oil) ,or literally translated as oil-fried devil, is a traditional breakfast favourite amongst the folks in the city as well as in the countryside. This video discovered one such home-made yeow char kwai that has been around in Jenjarom for over 35 years. Mr Yew is the man behind this and he inherited his special traditional dessert recipes from his mother way back in 1982.
Today , this second generation business is a household name (and landmark ) in Jenjarom. He operates at the open-air wet market in Jenjarom(Manaweblife has a video on this too) as well as from his house nearby from 5pm to 10pm. This video shows how the yeow char kwai is created and formed into golden crispy temptations . They are infused with garlic to give it a rich aroma.
Besides this highlight, Mr Yew is also well-known for his dessert such as "ham chim pang" and "tong sui" such as red bean and most interestingly the peanut "tong sui" which takes up to 6-8 hours of boiling and attention. Indeed, this peanut "tong sui" is a rare delight not commonly found because of its tedious process of preparation. Mr Yew told Manaweblife that this peanut "tong sui" is called "dou ren" in Hokkien and is popularly known as that by the locals here. The aroma is amazing and the texture is smooth and rich. You have got to come here to taste it!
