Caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak yesterday announced 18 new initiatives to lift Langkawi Island to a higher level of progress in the next five years.
He said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government was committed to implementing all 18 initiatives to raise the living standard of the people of the historic island to a greater level.
The initiatives included the setting up of an urban transformation centre (UTC) in Langkawi, an allocation of RM100 million provided by SME Bank in the form of financing of between RM25,000 and RM250,000 for Langkawi traders operating chalets, motels and retail outlets as well as a premium outlet would also be built here through a private sector investment of RM200 millionand a private hospital as a health tourism attraction.
