Former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak said holding the party election before the 15th general election weaken the party by causing a split.
The Pekan Umno chief also said it given other parties an opportunity to steal losing candidates.
He said this to reporters after delivering his address at the Malaysian Democracy Forum: Charting the Future of Parliamentary Democracy in Malaysia on Monday.
