Working through the night, members of a Brazilian NGO dug a hundred symbolic graves on the beach opposite the famous Copacabana Hotel, sticking crosses into the sand in a tribute to those who lost their lives to the coronavirus.

With over 770,000 confirmed cases and 39,680 deaths at the hands of Covid-19, Rio de Paz has had enough of contradictory statements and repeated downplaying of the pandemic by Brazilian president Jair Bolsanaro.

Brazil has the second highest number of coronavirus cases globally, and third highest fatalities. Critics across the country have slammed the president, who once called Covid-19 a "little flu", for his handling of the crisis.
