Have you tasted sesame balls filled with red bean paste from Sg Lima Village on Pula Ketam? This unique and classic Chinese dessert is called 'jian dui' or 'ma tuan' and is said to be originated from Changan, China. You may find these in some 'tim sum' restaurants and are sometimes found in other countries in the region. This video showcases some residents and their friends gathering together to make sesame balls during the Chinese New Year.
Indeed, this is an essential item to Hokkiens for prayers and worship of the heavenly gods (pie thein kung)  especially on the 9th day of CNY.
They are probably the last craftswomen with such skills around, because the younger generations have no interest in continuing this tradition. Watch the ladies do their magic. They even have distinctive moulds with auspicious Chinese characters to stamp on the balls. It seems eating the balls will expand your fortunes just like the balls expand themselves when put into the hot oil.
How do these glutinous rice sesame balls taste like? Firstly, they are soft and crunchy to the bite. Inside, the bean paste oozes into your mouth with a sensational sweetness and lingering sesame aroma.
