And after an insanely close competition, the winner of Miss Universe 2015 has been crowned, so let’s all give a warm congratulations to MISS COLUMBIA! Wait a minute, that’s not right, is it?
OH wait, you mean the actual winner!? Welp, this is awkward. Ok, so scratch that, and now let’s all give a round of applause to the actual Miss Universe 2015, Miss Philippines!
No, guys, that wasn’t just a mediocre Monday morning act to help get you through the final few days before Christmas… because if there’s two people who are probably having a worse Monday than you are, I’m gonna have to give that one to Miss Columbia herself and the host of Miss Universe 2015, Steve Harvey, who just crowned the WRONG winner.
Literally the entire ‘universe’ tuned into to last night’s Miss Universe pageant where the final few moments led to a unanimous “W-T-F” heard ‘round the world. Steve Harvey took to the stage along with the final two contestants, Miss Columbia, Ariadna Gutierrez, and Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, to announce the winner, and after announcing Miss Columbia the next Miss Universe, the crown was placed, tears were shed and the moment was already being soaked in under layers of spray tan, until tragedy struck.
Cameras panned directly over to Miss Philippines who was equally as confused and shocked, when she then took the stage to awkwardly collect her crown that had already been placed on the head of the runner up, and here’s what happened next… Ok, we’re totally kidding about that one. But thankfully, the situation was handled as best as it could’ve been and Miss Philippines was (sort of) able to have her own moment… Steve Harvey, who was probably wishing he could go crawl into a hole and never come out, took full responsibility of the situation, saying, "Listen folks, let me just take control of this. This is exactly what's on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake. It is my mistake."
So thankfully the show went on, BUT you guys, while the remainder of the crowning ceremony was wrapped up and cut short, it will take the Internet much longer to forget about this mistake. Steve took to Twitter directly after the show, writing a series of tweets that said QUOTE, "I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.Secondly, I'd like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake. I don't want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing."
Yo Steve, your apology is great and all, BUT THOSE MEMES THOUGH. The Internet, as per usual, took this awkward straight-out-of-a-movie situation and turned it into a comical roast. A few of the best Miss Universe memes included this one of Justin Bieber’s body with Steve’s head cropped on, with the words, “Is it too late now to say sorry?” It apparently was such a huge hit that even Bieber himself posted it to his Instagram page.
Other fan-favorited pop culture memes include this one of a scene from Mean Girls with Steve crowning the wrong winner, and another one of a famous Oprah Winfrey shot, saying “YOU’RE MISS UNIVERSE, YOU’RE MISS UNIVERSE, EVERYONE IS MISS UNIVERSE” with Steve’s half of the meme saying, “The winner is Miss Philombia”.
So whether it was the intention or not, it’s safe to say that Miss Universe 2015 will definitely be one for the books, and thanks to the Internet, will not be forgotten for a long time. So while you’re all scrolling through even more cringe-worthy memes and reminiscing on all the awkwardness, I want to know your thoughts on the entire night, so get the conversation going right down here in the comments section. After that, you can click right over here to see which celeb had the best comeback on a brand new episode of Debatable.
