Seldom do we get a chance to see such an elaborate show at the Arts On The Move initiative at the Jalan Masjid Jamik LRT train station. This video shows a riveting performance by the fame Penang Teo Chew Puppetry Opera troupe. However the puppets were not at hand. Nevertheless, this 3rd generation family group showcased the traditional artistry that stretches back to the Han dynasty.Noticed how they are all in steady uniform and the huge number of classical musical instruments and set-up that goes into this show. The troupe lady leader actually learned this craft from her grandmother who was a opera puppetry performer too.The entire performance was done in the Teo Chew dialect, a dialect that came from the Choasan area of eastern Guangdong in China. In the 19th century this dialect spread across South East Asia and hence to Penang. And so too came their tradition of puppetry opera. No doubt this family troupe is keeping this tradition alive for all to experience.
