We all knew Will was being honored with the Generation Award, but what we didn’t know was how the network would give it to him.
I hope you all have your popcorn ready and tissues within reach, because it’s gonna be a doozy. Before the one and only fresh prince of Bel-Air was welcomed on stage to receive the honor, Will and the rest of the world sat through a pretty amazing musical tribute by The Lonely Island.
Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer all donned Will’s iconic blue denim overalls with busy printed button-ups and performed a medley of Will’s biggest hits throughout the years. The guys started off their cover medley with ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand…’
They rapped the classic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song, ‘Summertime,’ danced along to ‘Men In Black,’ and ended their cover of his greatest hits with ‘Getting’ Jiggy With It. To be quite honest, I can’t think of anyone better to perform a tribute to Will Smith than the guys of The Lonely Island. Once they were done with their performance, Queen Latifah and Halle Berry both gave short, but heartfelt speeches about all of the good Will has done for aspiring actors and actresses and then the time came for the man of the hour to come up and accept his award.
