Up Close With A Blood Sucker: HD Animation Of Ticks

This super close up footage shows an Ixodes Ricinus tick waiting to climb onto a passing host. The footage was captured by Stephan Diller using Nanoflight technology -- which records a Scanning Electron Microscope image. Common in Europe, North Africa and America, tick's satisfy their nutritional requirements on a diet of blood, a practice known as hematophagy. Feeding on mammals, birds and sometimes reptiles and amphibians they are known carriers of disease including Rocky mountain spotted fever and lyme disease. Thriving in warms conditions and the summer months, tick season will soon be upon us.
