The 41-year-old Vietnamese “datuk,” who was remanded last week for allegedly offering bribes to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers to release detained fishing boats, was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.
Tran Thi Mai, who is also known as Maimunah, was charged with two counts of bribing an MMEA director to the total of RM350,000.
Tran is said to have met Sedili MMEA director Amran Daud at the Parkroyal Hotel in Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur in May.
She is accused of paying Amran through a middleman, Mohammad Sani Abdullah, to secure the release of three Vietnamese fishing vessels – BWFSYA3, KNF7636 and ALYA 5 – which were caught in Malaysian waters.
