Let’s face it – you can’t NOT sing along to “Bodak Yellow”, but a word from the wise – the N-word has and always will be OFF LIMITS.
Not one, but multiple Victoria’s Secret models have been called out after a backstage video went viral that showed the group singing along to Cardi B’s hit “Bodak Yellow” while blatantly uttering the N-word along with the track.
The video was posted by Twitter account Pop Crave just yesterday, showing a group of mostly-white models singing along to the track, including the use of the N-word, during the fashion show that took place in Shanghai this year.
Naturally, this angered many Twitter users, including writer Mikelle Street, called out the models, pointing out that the word was too loud and clear for there to only be one black girl in the room. Many others shared his outrage, and some even called for the models to be fired. Another Twitter user wrote, “Welp, @VictoriasSecret plz fire all of them for saying the n-word all carefree,” while another agreed, saying, “All white ones canceled for saying the n-word.”
And it’s not to say that if you’re white, you can’t enjoy the song, but it is entirely possible to do so without inappropriately repeating the word. One tweet that summed it perfectly read, “If you’re not black, don’t say the N word. Point. Blank. Period.”
But as many were quick to point out, one model that DID keep her mouth shut during the line was Devon Windsor, who picked back up singing at the next verse, and was dubbed as ‘the safe one’. At this time, the video is still live, and none of the models involved nor Victoria’s Secret have commented, however, this isn’t the first controversy Victoria’s Secret has faced regarding racism and cultural appropriation – back in 2010, a a so-called “tribal skirt” at the show was criticized, as well as appropriation of Asian and Native American cultures during the 2012, 2016 and even this year’s show.
It’s 2017, when will they learn?! But right now I’m curious to know your opinion on the backstage video that went viral, and if you think the models should be fired over the indiscretion, so share all your thoughts in the comments, and after that, click right over here to see why Victoria’s Secret is under fire AGAIN after one model fell on the runway.
