The google owned platform announced a new rule on Thursday requiring creators to reach a minimum of 10,000 lifetime views before they can earn a share of ad revenue from the site.
YouTube said it is looking to reduce the number of channels that steal content from other individuals or companies in order rack up video views that they can then use to make money through the site's partner program.
Back in 2007 YouTube launched the partner program that allowed anyone could become a part of. Meaning if you posted a video to the site you had the ability to make money from the content. Now, you must get 10,000 lifetime views before becoming eligible for the partner program. YouTube will then review your content after 10 thousand views to make sure it fits their community guidelines and advertiser policies… If so, you’ll be able to start making money on the platform.
YouTube added that channels that have made money prior to yesterday with under 10 thousand views will be able to keep any revenue they earned…
Moving forward it will suck if your first video goes viral and you make NONE of the money- However I get where they are coming from. They are a business and need to make decisions that help shape the platform for them to make money.
I think things are shifting quickly as they are trying to manage content to get more money from advertisers which means the future of YouTube is SCARY for creators who want to be their authentic selves. I see YouTube aligning with TV, which means the content they promote, will start to change drastically.
Alright friends, I do want to know what you think about YouTube changing their policies on becoming a partner on the platform. Let’s chat in the comment section below and don’t forget to hit that subscribe button. I’m Ryland Adams and I’ll see you soon!
