In a shocking interview during the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, News Corp CEO Robert Thomson was on record as a major critic of big tech companies, like YouTube and Facebook, claiming that they’ve sucked money away from major journalism companies like his own, going so far as to describe YouTube as a QUOTE “toxic waste dump”.
Thomson even discussed this issue further with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg, concluding that there needs to be a “re-alignment” in the relationship between content-producing companies like News Corp and these up-and-coming media platforms.
So everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and sure, News Thomson’s critique of these platforms, like YouTube and Facebook, might be backed by some evidence, but can I just point out that some of the most impactful videos featuring art, self-expression, and awareness can only be found on YouTube?
Case in point, many celebrities have been sharing their personal stories of mental health, their decision to come out, among many other stories, like Demi Lovato, Gigi Gorgeous, and Tyler Oakley to name a few…
Other videos, like the Prank It Forward segments we produce here at Defy Media, are created to pay forward a good deed to people who need it most, but these videos also spread joy to viewers, proving that a little bit of kindness can go a long way…
Although Thomson revealed that after spending an entire day talking through these issues with Zuckerberg, he did say that QUOTE, “I think there was a recognition at the end of it, for the relationship to be a fruitful one, particularly for subscriptions, something needs to happen.” He did mention that a lot of the media laws range from being QUOTE “outdated and outrageous” and were clearly crafted before the age of Facebook and Google, two companies that dominate the digital advertising world.
Although media laws are now being confronted, it seems as though these large digital players are the present and future of media, and don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. But right now I gotta know what you guys think about Thomson’s comments on YouTube and other platforms – and while I have you here, I’m curious to know which videos have impacted you for the better. After that, you can click right over here to get all the details on the world’s largest Starbucks. Thanks for hanging out with me here on Clevver News, I’m Joslyn Davis and I’ll see you next time.
