首相马哈迪说如果人民觉得消费税更好，政府才会考虑恢复消费税之后，财长林冠英也强调，政府成功在废除消费税后控制了通货膨胀率，再说，人民在上届大选时已经清楚表明，拒绝6%的消费税。
林冠英周五在记者会上说，“上届大选只是去年的事，人民已经清楚表示他们拒绝6%消费税。除非你能给我毫无争议的证据，显示这就是
人民的意愿（恢复消费税）。”
“我想我们要尊重人民上届大选的委托。”
