金正男命案发生后，大马和朝鲜的外交关系发生变化，甚至传出断交说法。时政评论员潘永强在《当今大马》的专栏中点出，两国关系紧张，但不一定非得走上断交这一步，下一步其实还有其他选择，包括将外交关系降级，从大使级关系降级为代办级关系，要求朝鲜大使离开，减少朝鲜驻马使馆的外交官人数，以及撤销两国免签入境的待遇。
