In response to Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching's call for child marriage to be made illegal through the newly proposed Child Sexual Offences bill, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said responded that the bill will only be focussing on offences that are sexual in nature but welcomed Teo to raise the issue and debate it in the Dewan Rakyat.
Teo recalled the statistics revealed by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development that almost 15,000 girls under the age of 15 were married in 2010 and that the country adopted a United Nations resolution to end child marriage, at the Human Rights Council in October 2013.
