Fire crews battled the Caldor Fire in mostly-deserted Lake Tahoe, California, on Wednesday as gusty winds and bone-dry conditions complicated their efforts to slow the spread of the raging wildfire.

About 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to flee the area near the popular resort destination, where homes and businesses faced destruction as the blaze closed in.

Winds were pushing the fire toward a ski resort, where crews were using its snow-making machines to coat the terrain with water.
