Fans were SHOCKED when Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired by Disney, after controversial Tweets he’d posted almost a decade ago came to light. James was in the middle of pre-production for the third installment of the Guardians franchise, when inappropriate “jokes” he’d previously shared on Twitter resurfaced. The Tweets ranged from disturbing and inappropriate jokes about rape, pedophilia, and 9/11, and in a statement Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said QUOTE, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
After James was fired, he came out with his own statement about the Tweets and Disney’s decision to fire him from his Guardians directing duties, which read QUOTE, “My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since—not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”
He added QUOTE, “Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all."
Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Guardians films, was quick to defend James on Twitter, writing QUOTE, “I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this..@JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He's gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He's made mistakes. We all have. Im NOT ok with what's happening to him."
Dave’s co-stars, Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, who play Peter Quill and Gamora in the franchise, respectively, were slower to respond to James’s firing and the backlash that came with the resurfaced controversial Tweets. But both stars have now commented on the situation.
Zoe Tweeted QUOTE, “It’s been a challenging weekend I’m not gonna lie. I’m pausing myself to take everything in before I speak out of term. I just want everyone to know I love ALL members of my GOTG family. Always will.” Meanwhile Chris’s response was more cryptic, as the actor simply shared a bible verse on Twitter which read QUOTE, ““Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters. Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. - JAMES 1:19”.
While neither Chris nor Zoe put their full, outward support for James or condemned Disney’s decision to fire the helmer, it does seem like they DO support him, and are not thrilled with the studio’s quick decision to can him over the old Tweets.
Okay guys now I wanna turn it over to you -- are you surprised at Zoe and Chris’s response to James’s firing, and do you think they’ll have more to say about the situation in the coming weeks and months? And do you think Disney made the right decision with firing James over the Tweets? Let me hear all your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
