Chinese rural residents have ushered in the Lunar New Year of Tiger amid loud applause to vibrant galas featuring captivating cultural performances.

Suburban communities and villages across the country presented colorful repertoires of local cultural performances, including traditional dances, operas and musical instrument performances in celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

The 2022 Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Feb. 1. In Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes bravery, vigor and strength that can lift people from adversity and usher in final auspiciousness and peace.

In a township located in Shannan City of southwest China's Tibetan Autonomous Region, residents dressed in traditional attires attended a gala recently staged in the community square. The gala featured 15 shows involving singing and dancing performances, crosstalk, sketch comedies and traditional Tibetan Opera.

According to UNESCO, Tibetan Opera is a comprehensive art combining folk song, dance, storytelling, chant, acrobatics and religious performance, popular among ethnic groups living in China's Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
