The producer of Disney’s ‘Frozen’ reveals the film’s ORIGINAL ending--and it’s way more complicated than the one they went with.
The moment ‘Frozen’ hit theatres, it became an instant Disney classic, but that might not have been the case if they’d stuck to the original ending…
The ending of ‘Frozen’ as we know about it is all about sisterly bonding and major girl power, but according to Peter Del Vecho, who was a producer on the film, that wasn’t always going to be the case.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Peter explained that Elsa was originally conceived as an ice queen who froze her own heart after her fiancé left her at the altar. Anna, on the other hand, was the young protagonist with a heart of gold--and she and Elsa weren’t even related at all!
And the ending of THAT version of the film was way more complicated than the one we know and love. It basically went like this: Instead of escaping to be alone with her powers, Elsa enlisted an army of snow monsters to attack the movie’s protagonists. Hans, aka the evil prince who tricks Anna into falling in love with him, triggered an avalanche to stop Elsa, and was totally fine with killing all of the innocent villagers in Arendelle in the process. Hans is then revealed to be the “ruler with a frozen heart” from the prophecy, and Anna convinces Elsa to use her icy powers to save the kingdom. She does, her heart unfreezes, and this leads her to finally being able to love again. The end.
Wow. That’s not just a completely different ending--that’s a whole different movie! Producer Peter explained the very good reason Disney decided to axe that whole plot, telling Entertainment Weekly QUOTE, “we had no emotional connection to Elsa — we didn’t care about her because she had spent the whole movie being the villain.”
That’s when the creatives behind the film decided the movie should be about love versus fear, instead of the classic good versus evil trope.
Peter went on to explain of the change QUOTE, “Making them related led us to the idea of [Elsa] living in fear of her powers...What if she’s afraid of who she is? And afraid of hurting the ones she loves? Now we had a character in Anna who was all about love and Elsa who was all about fear.”
It’s a good thing the producers decided to let that crazy original plot go...get it? They “let it go”...okay I’m done.
